1. ## Standard Deviation

A sample of 100 adult women was taken, and each was asked how many children she had. the results were as follows:

0 children = 27 women

1 child = 22 women

2 children = 30 women

3 children = 12 women

4 children = 7 women

5 children = 2 women

Find the sample standard deviation of the number of children

I've spent the better portion of an hour trying to input numbers into the standard deviation formula in my textbook but I can't seem to get the right answer which is supposed to be 1.3502. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What have you found for the sample mean? What formulas have you used? What did you find for the sample SD?

(the given answer is not what I would call the sample standard deviation but is the estimate of the population standard deviation based on the sample, that is the variance calculation has a divisor of 99 not 100).
