[RESOLVED]interpretation of residuals and R.M.S. error

I'm confused to what the difference is between residuals and R.M.S. error. Both measure how much an observed data misses the line of regression so why do we need them both?

The residuals can show systematic departure from a regression curve, failure of homoscadicity assumptions and other artifacts, while the rms error is just a summary statistic for the residuals.
