So I understand how to construct a sequence inductively (sometimes) but I am not sure in this case how the second part of the hint is supposed to help me show that I can construct the sequence. Any pointers?

I think there's a typo, the hint should be $\displaystyle \lim_{y\rightarrow a}\frac{f(x_n)-f(y)}{x_n-y}$
