Hi, I'm trying to add two hexadecimal numbers, FE20 and 0A3F. I thought I should be getting a group of 4 hexadecimal numbers in my answer (this is out of the Computer Systems 4th Edition textbook by Warford). I've attached an image of the problem. I'm working on 6e and the computer system this book works with is Pep/8. Now the answer I get is 085F with a carry of 1 on the end but I feel like I read somewhere that you have to do something with that carry bit such as bringing it back down and adding it to the sum previously achieved. I don't know if I'm right or if I need to do something else but I hope someone can help me.

2. ## Re: Hexadecimal Addition with the Carry bit on the end?

I don't know the Pep/8 system. Perhaps the carry is stored in one of the memory registers (accounting for one of the other 4 hexadecimal numbers in your answer). Without knowing the specific algorithms you are supposed to follow, I can't help you. The book should tell you what to do with the carry.

That's the thing. All the examples I can find in the book and the net don't have carrys on the end. I'm not supposed to store anything into a carry bit though I know that much.

If you don't have any instructions for what to do with the carry bit, then it is lost.
