It should have been a = -1 and b = 2: I didn't read the diagram correctly.

14 - 1 - 4 = 9 which checks out.

The Z co-ordinate is 2 not -1.

but b refers to the front-back distance doesn't it? Which is -1! Z=2 is the up down distance, and isn't that represented by C?

No: you are trying to find the y distance.

Z distance is 2, and the X distance is -1: both from the origin.
