
Volume of a DNA Cylinder
Assume DNA has the shape of a cylinder. The crosssection is a circle with a diameter of 4 nm. The vertical distance between two base pairs (nucleic acids on opposite DNA strands) is 4 Å. Calculate the volume of a gene which encodes a protein sequence of 1,000 amino acids. Compare this to Schrödinger’s estimate. Are the two results within an order of magnitude?

2. What is the relationship between nucleic acids and amino acids?
3. What is the volume of a cylinder, in general?
4. What is Schrödinger's estimate?
Once you've answered these questions, I think you can write out the formula giving you the answer.
