" A rectangular catalyst panel must provide cm2 effective area. It requires 8 cm installation margins on one pair of parallel sides and 12 cm on the other sides. What panel dimensions minimise the total area ?

The let the length and width be $x$ and $y$ then the effective area is:

$A= (x-16)(y-24)$

this is the constraint.

You want to find $x$ and $y$ to minimise $O=xy$, this is the objective.
