    Question Determining inconsistent matrix

    Hi,

I hope someone can help. Lets suppose a system of linear equations has a 3 x 5 augmented matrix whose fifth column is a pivot column. Is the system consistent? I feel that it wouldn't matter if the fifth column is a pivot column since that column represents just constants in the equations anyways. Please let me know what you think.

    Re: Determining inconsistent matrix

    If the fifth column is a pivot column, it's guaranteed inconsistent because you have a row [0 \, 0 \, 0 \, 0 \, 1] which means that 0=1.
