    Very basic question - It has to be...

    Why am I getting a zero determinant for the matrix:

    -2 1 1
    1 -2 1
    1 1 -2

    if the column or row vectors don't seem linearly dependant?

    Add the first row to the 2nd and you get -1 times the third row. So indeed they are not independent equations.
