    Matrix and reduced row echelon

    If A is a 3 x 5 matrix, then the number of leading 1's in its reduced row echelon form is at most ___________. Explain.

    Hint: If you row-reduce the matrix with leading 1's in each column, then what is the maximum number of these 1's that you can get?
