Think about what the rank is telling you: you are reducing a system down to it's smallest number of linearly independent vectors in the system when you do a reduced row reduction.
Now the dimension of something is the number of elements required to give a basis for this system, but the rank tells us the number after we do a row reduction.
So what does the above tell us?
