Thread: Matrix With Parameters

I have this matrix where I need to find the values for x and y such that the system is inconsistent. I tried reducing the matrix so that each row would have a pivot, but I ended up with quite a mess,



Can't figure out if I am stumbling somewhere or even where to venture from here. Any hints or help is appreciated.

Try 2-x-y=0

In case anyone else comes along this thread. I think for the system to be inconsistent would need 2-y-x=0, and also the additional condition -2x^2-5x+1/=0 (not equal to zero). In thinking about the problem, suppose we wanted to know when the system had infinite solutions, then we'd have 2-x-y=2x^2+5x-1=0, correct?
