# Thread: values of x of factored equation (roots)

1. ## values of x of factored equation (roots)

i was trying to use the quadratic formula and it seems like my answer never match on the given answer provided.

( x -2) ( 2x - 1) = 5

i also tried (x -2) = 5 | (2x - 1) = 5 but still it not equal to the provided answers or root like 3 and -1/2

little guide on here ... thanks

Are you trying to solve this equation? If so

\displaystyle \begin{align*} (x - 2)(2x - 1) &= 5 \\ 2x^2 - x - 4x + 2 &= 5 \\ 2x^2 - 5x - 3 &= 0 \\ 2x^2 - 6x + x - 3 &= 0 \\ 2x(x - 3) + 1(x - 3) &= 0 \\ (x - 3)(2x + 1) &= 0 \\ x - 3 = 0 \textrm{ or } 2x + 1 &= 0 \\ x = 3 \textrm{ or } x &= -\frac{1}{2} \end{align*}
