Jim had a flight with Quantas from Sydney to Perth. The departure was at 10:25 am Sydney time and he arrived in Perth at 12:00 noon local time. Then at his return flight his departure from Perth was at 10:00 am local time, and he arrived in Sydney at 5:35 pm Sydney time.

Find
(i) what is time difference between Sydney and Perth and
(ii) how much time the flight takes, assuming the the average speed of the aircraft is the same in both directions.









(a) Express this problem as a set of two simultaneous equations. Be sure to define your variables correctly.

(b) Solve your system of equations simultaneously. Show your working and present the answer in a clear form in hours and minutes.

Let time difference be x minutes (Perth behind Sydney) and let T = actual journey time.
For Sydney to Perth time taken on clock=95 min. So T=95+x
For Perth to Sydney time taken on clock= 455min. So T=455-x
Hence 95+x=455-x
