    Fractional Powers of a Matrix

    hi everyone,
I want to calculate fractional power of a matrix. As i know there is a way to calculate this things and it is here.
But my problem is my matrix is of 256 X 256.So how i will solve a polynomial of power 256 ?
Is there any other way so that i can calculate the power of a matrix ?

    with regards
    bibhu.

Re: Fractional Powers of a Matrix

Off-hand, I would say to use the QR algorithm to compute the eigenvalues. In fact, when computers find the roots of polynomials, sometimes what they do is construct the associated matrix (that is, the eigenvalues of the matrix are equal to the roots of the given polynomial), and then hand it over to the QR algorithm to compute the eigenvalues.
