I'm trying to figure out if a system has to have a unique solution to be consistent or if solving for 2 variables in terms of a third is also included.

A consistent system has at least one solution, period. It could have many solutions, but that's ok.
Cool got it. My notes weren't really clear on that but that's perfect.
