If ql and q2 are the outputs from Gram-Schmidt, what were the possible input vectors a and b?

a and b can be any two vectors in the subspace spanned by q1 and q2.

I think he means he started the orthonomalisation with a and b and ended with q1 and q2, so to start him off obviously q1 is either a/|a| or b/|b| ..
