Thread: eigenvalues question

hello,

i have a question asking me to give an example of a 3x3 matrix which has distinct eigeinvales -1 and 2 with dimE2 = 2 [where the '2' in 'E2' is a subscript]

what does the dimE2 = 2 mean? it's probably something really obvious, but i'm lost.

E2 is probably the vector space of eigenvectors corresponding to the eigenvalue 2. Dim E2 would then be the dimension of that space.
