if 3 independent vectors with 4 components are combined like in cv + dw + eu then do they span a 3d space within 4d space or do they span all of R^4?

Time for both of us to upgrade. I think you would have a tough time spanning R^4 with three vectors. Try spanning R^2 with one vector.
i'm just looking back at some of my notes and I found a line that says: cv + dw spans a plane if v and w are not perpendicular, is that even correct?
Take your pick to make it correct: 1) Delete the "not". 2) Change "perpendicular" to "parallel". You need to take better notes.
Since it seems like you've been away from lin. alg. for a while, I don't think it is unreasonable to ask if you remember what it means for something to span $\displaystyle \mathbb{R}^2$?
