    Row Equivalent Matrices

    For the following augmented matrix, I need to determine for what value of h its consistant

    Because the last line has 2+h = 0, the only value that h can be is -2

    If I'm wrong can you explain why

    Yes; I get h = -2, too.

    You have x_2 = (-3 - x_2)/h

    x_1 + h*(x_2) = -3

    (2 + h)*x_2 = 0

    [(-h - 2)*(x + 3)]/h = 0

    Solve for h;

    h = -2

    As you demonstrated, in your case it's easy to eyeball it.
